Michigan Egress Window Installation

Installing egress windows is an important part of home safety. They provide a method of escape from lower floors and basements in case of fire or other home catastrophe, providing protection from death and injury. Most building codes require that rooms have multiple escape routes, such as a door and window capable of allow an adult to fit through. In basements, this presents a problem because all or a portion of the room is underground. Since many basements have only one entrance and exit, the main stairway used to access the basement from the house, exit routes can be cut off in case of a fire or other emergency such as a structural collapse.
The solution for a window to be built at such a height and in such a manner that it allows easy egress from the basement. These windows open fully, like a glass door in miniature, and generally are not screened. They may be built into already existing window frames or have special openings designed into the home or constructed. The construction is not much more complicated than installing a window or doorway, but may require small-scale excavation. These openings usually take the form of a pit below the ground level of the home, adequately drained, and with steps lead up to the ground from the window. If the window must be used to egress the home in an emergency, it can be unlatched from inside and pushed open. Access is done with furniture, interior steps, or a small ladder.
